How do they relate to this?

After they’ve gotten clear on the gap between where they are and where they’d like to go (their possibility) … how do we work with that?

We can help them take a look at what’s getting in the way. And to distinguish how they relate to that thing that’s getting in the way.

Some examples of what might be getting in the way: I am overwhelmed by email, I feel like all my tasks are weighing me down, I’m frustrated with my spouse, I keep putting off my writing sessions because they feel difficult.

When we get clear on what’s getting in the way, it can be powerful to look at how they’re relating to that thing. How do they relate to email, tasks, their spouse, their writing sessions?

For example:

  • I relate to my email as a bunch of ways to fail other people
  • I relate to tasks as burden
  • I relate to my spouse as always making me wrong
  • I relate to the writing sessions as a way to prove I’m a failure

Once we’ve distinguished our relationship to the thing getting in the way … we can create a new, empowered relationship to that thing (see next entry). But we have to look at the current relationshp first.

NEXT: Do they feel empowered?
