What is a shift in being?

A lot of people think coaching is a way to help us to shift what we Do.

But it’s often actually a way to help us to shift how we Be.

When we show up to write, for example, we might want to focus on the writing. But how we’re being during the writing sessions is even more important.

Am I bringing the being of Curiosity, Play, or Generosity? Maybe Power, Radiance, or Joy? These are ways of being that are at the core of our essence.

As a coach, you can train in seeing someone’s essence — the light that they bring into the world, that is easiest to see when they feel relaxed and at home. But when fear and ego take over their being, it shows up as their shadow, which most people relate to. Your job as coach is to see their light instead of only their shadow.

And you can help them practice bringing out that light more. For example, I practice the being of Play, Curiosity, Compassion, Truth, on a regular basis. I write the words on a card and remind myself to bring these ways of being.

Being work can shift everything we do — it can turn something ordinary into something magical.
